Highlight & Read: March Book Announcement

The March book is For Such a Time by Kate Breslin!

In 1944, blond and blue-eyed Jewess Hadassah Benjamin feels abandoned by God when she is saved from a firing squad only to be handed over to a new enemy. Pressed into service by SS-Kommandant Colonel Aric von Schmidt at the transit camp of Theresienstadt in Czechoslovakia, she is able to hide behind the false identity of Stella Muller. However, in order to survive and maintain her cover as Aric’s secretary, she is forced to stand by as her own people are sent to Auschwitz.

Suspecting her employer is a man of hidden depths and sympathies, Stella cautiously appeals to him on behalf of those in the camp. Aric’s compassion gives her hope, and she finds herself battling a growing attraction for this man she knows she should despise as an enemy.

Stella pours herself into her efforts to keep even some of the camp’s prisoners safe, but she risks the revelation of her true identity with every attempt. When her bravery brings her to the point of the ultimate sacrifice, she has only her faith to lean upon. Perhaps God has placed her there for such a time as this, but how can she save her people when she is unable to save herself?

Highlight & Read: August/September Book Announcement

Quick apology here. Back in June, the book club date did not work for another member, and it was never properly rescheduled. It just so happens that it was also supposed to be a combined meeting with the March/April book to also be discussed. And with the next Michael Vey book coming out sooner than I originally thought (making it a possible September/October choice). I think it would be a good idea to revisit these books (since I know both members never finished 3) for August/September.

Rise of the Elgen

In the second installment of the Michael Vey series, Michael must rescue his mother from one of the Elgen’s several compounds. But the Elgen know where the Electroclan is  and after narrowing escaping a trap, the Electroclan is led to jungles of Peru by a mysterious voice. There are several questions, but one stands out….is this all a trap?

Battle of Ampere

Michael and the rest of the Electroclan are now scattered in the Amazon Jungle. Both the Elgen and Peruvian army are searching from them and Michael is the only one who manages to escape capture. Now Michael must find a way to save his friends from possible death. Meanwhile, Doctor Hatch starts his plans for global domination.

This meeting of Highlight & Read will take place on Saturday, September 27, 2014 at 10 A.M. Please comment if you plan on attending. If that doesn’t work for you please comment or contact me personally. The meeting place will depend on who attends.

Highlight & Read: May/June Book Announcement

The May/June book is Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen!

I’ve decided that it is time to take a break from the Mother-Daughter Book Club. After reading Pies & Prejudice, I really wanted to read Pride & Prejudice and just a year before I dreaded having to read it for school.

Pride & Prejudice is a story that follows the Bennet family. They have five daughters and no sons. Mrs. Bennet is obsessed with finding her daughters’ wealthy husbands and the Bennet family’s world is shook when Mr. Bingley and his snobbish rich friend Mr. Darcy come to town.

I know we all know what happens in the end, but the book is well written and even though I knew what was going to happen in the end I was seriously doubting it for a moment.

This meeting of Highlight & Read is scheduled to take place June 8th, 2012 at 3:00 P.M. on the Highlight & Read’s Bookclubit page. Please comment if you plan on attending. If that doesn’t work for you please leave a comment or contact me personally also.

I look forward to June 8th!

Please remember that the April/May book club meeting is on May 18th at 3:00 P.M.!

Highlight & Read: April/May Book Announcement

The April/May book is Pies & Prejudice by Heather Vogel Frederick!

Pies & Prejudice is the fourth book in the Mother-Daughter Book Club, and it’s another crazy year for Emma, Jess, Cassidy, and Megan.

When the Hawthorne’s house swap with The Berkley’s, a family in England, the Mother-Daughter Book Club refuses to let that get in the way of their club and friendship.Through videoconferencing, the book club keeps in touch. This year they decide to read Pride & Prejudice, but it soon turns out that the house swap is the least of their problems.

In England, Emma has to deal with a new queen bee, Annabelle. And back in Concord, Cassidy clashes with Tristan Berkley, a modern-day Mr. Darcy, and everyone ,especially the girls, is taken with Simon Berkley. Meanwhile Cassidy, Emma, Jess, and Megan come up with a business, Pies & Prejudice, to raise money to bring Emma home.

Will their plan succeed? Will the book club ever be back together again? Will Cassidy realize that Tristan is her Mr. Darcy in time?

This meeting of Highlight & Write is scheduled to take place on Saturday, May 12, 2013 on Highlight & Read’s Bookclubit page. Please comment if you plan on attending. If that doesn’t work for you please leave a comment or contact me personally also.

Look forward to May 12!
